Boston, Massachusetts has always been a forerunner in implementing new and innovative technologies: the first subway system in North America was developed there, and now also the first outdoor wayfinding sign installation. We were asked by the Boston Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics to develop a digital information display based on E Ink technology. The solution had to fit the historical kiosk without ruining its aesthetics, and the mechanical design had to be precise, yet flexible.
The new ePaper sign had been designed to fit inside an existing kiosk, and to provide both visitors and residents of City Hall Plaza with information about local events, while helping them locate nearby landmarks. The sign is designed to be fully outdoor and solar-powered, withstanding every weather condition, and becoming an important landmark of the smart city network. It is possible to control the display both remotely and in real time, thanks to a broadband antenna.
The outdoor LED monitor eTELA offers the experience of a printed text or color photograph thanks to a new display technology, with easy readability in full sunlight, low power consumption and reliability in all weather conditions.
eTELA devices benefit from a real time geolocation system and from up-to-date information, crucial features for displaying prices and offers on outdoor digital menu boards.
