How ePaper Works

How does ePaper work? ePaper, also known as electronic paper, is technology that mimics the appearance of ordinary ink on paper. Electronic paper displays differ from LCD panels in that they reflect light like paper, rather than emitting light. ePaper displays contain millions of miniscule capsules filled with a clear fluid containing microscopic particles of different colors and electrical charges.

Electrodes located above and below the capsules move up and down when a positive or negative electric field is applied, which makes the surface of the electronic paper display reflect a certain color. E-paper is bistable – no power is needed to retain an image, and reflective – ambient light reflects from the surface of the display.

Benefits of ePaper

The main advantages of electronic paper over traditional LCD screens are paper-like readability and extremely low power consumption. ePaper reduces eyestrain since it simulates paper rather than a computer screen. ePaper is easier to read outdoors and in bright sunlight; therefore, it is perfect for all indoor and outdoor displays, such as traffic signs, retail shelf labels, interactive museum signs and notice boards passenger information board (read also Why a bus stop should go digital ).

Electronic paper displays provide high-resolution and no glare visibility, allowing users to view text and pictures clearly and at any angle. GDS G+Natural-Light™ in-built front light affords the same viewing experience in the dark. ePaper power consumption is really minimal since electronic paper displays need no power to display an image; they simply use power to change the content.

ePaper Solutions

ePaper has multiple applications. It can be used to display real time bus arrival information, maps and schedules. Solar and/or battery-powered, ePaper displays are sustainable and do not require additional cables. They are also easy to read in natural light.

As traffic signs, electronic paper displays provide vital commuter information in all lighting conditions. ePaper displays can also be used in public or private buildings to inform visitors of events and landmark locations also The information displayed can be managed in real time and remotely.

ePaper Technical Advantages

ePaper offers a host of technical advantages, including –

  • Paper-like appearance
  • Bistable technology for minimal power consumption
  • Flexible battery or solar power displays
  • Multiple sizes
  • Really high definition
ePaper Summary

GDS ePaper display, eTela, is changing the way cities and institutions display information. Providing real time data from any angle, in all weather conditions, day or night. eTela is a cost-effective solution for signage at bus stops, train stations, gas stations, retail shops, museums and government buildings, among others.

Highly-sustainable due to its reliance solely on solar or battery-power, ePaper displays can be updated for entire service areas from a single locations through a wireless application and afford real time content management.
